Montana Mud Shirts began in 2003 out of a garage in Missoula. To make all of their shirts, they first begin by digging clay right out of the mountains in the area. Once they've acquired enough dirt, they mix it with water, which gives it that unique terra-cotta coloring. This method of dying relies on the iron oxide of the dirt to create a natural dye, using absolutely no chemicals or other additives.
