The trail was founded by John Bozeman and John Jacobs in 1863, and the next five years proved to be the trails most important era. Thousands of people would follow Bozeman and Jacobs with hopes of finding gold and better prospects. The tales originally came from a series of thirty-three Bozeman trail diaries that were published in two volumes called Journeys to the Land of Gold: Emigrant Diaries from the Bozeman Trail, 1863 - 1866. Bound for Montana: Diaries from the Bozeman Trail and Journeys to the Land of Gold: Emigrant Diaries from the Bozeman Trail, 1863 - 1866 are both edited by Susan Badger Doyle. Susan Badger Doyle has a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of New Mexico. Bound for Montana: Diaries from the Bozeman Trail and Susan Badger Doyle are associated with the Montana Historical Society.
