For as long as we can remember, the American bison has served as a symbol of the Wild West. At one point they roamed the plains of North America in huge herds, however, due to overhunting and loss of their habitat, they lost numbers in droves. Because of this, bison nearly went extinct in the last 1800s. But good news! With the help of passionate and dedicated conservations efforts, bison have made a true comeback. Here at Montana Gift Corral, we're always excited to shout out the United States' national mammal by sharing a bit of their history and the impact they've made in the Yellowstone National Park ecosystem and on Native American culture. This National Bison Day, tag along with us to learn more about the American Bison and to check out some of our favorite bison gifts and souvenirs!
History of the American Bison
For us, celebrating National Bison Day is all about reflecting on the vast history and cultural significance of these animals. At one point, bison roamed throughout the United States in healthy numbers, and have always played a critical role in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Their unique grazing patterns were known to help maintain the health of grasslands, and they've always been a main food source for wolves and other predators. Because of overhunting and habitat loss, their numbers dwindled and in the late 1800s, and at one point, they neared extinction. At their lowest, it's estimated that only a few hundred bison remained in the wild.
Luckily, a band of individuals who care about this species and their importance in the balance of plains ecosystems joined together to organize strict conservation efforts which lead to a successful comeback of the species. Today, Yellowstone National Park is one of the few places in the world where bison can be seen in their natural habitat! Visitors from far and wide gather here each year to check out these incredible animals roaming freely across the Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. Yellowstone is particularly special because it serves as a prime example of bison conservation, as it is home to one of the largest remaining public herds! While Yellowstone's bison population does fluctuate, it typically sits between 3,000-6,000. How cool is that?
A fun fact about bison is that they are known to travel in large herds, and they cater their eating preference to each season of the year. For example, in the winter, bison typically settle at lower elevations, where they'll often have luck finding food in snow-covered fields. On the other hand, during the summer months, they head back to higher locations, since there is more fresh grass to be found. Bison's migratory nature has been ingrained into their species since the beginning, since they've always had to be crafty when it comes to surviving in the sometimes cruel climates of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. Talk about resilience!
